Another disappointing deadline

Another promising season going down the fucking drain? There is definitely not a more frustrating organization in all of sports. Glenn Sather is a fucking moron adn we all know it. Appears to be another trade deadline where he does nothing but a minor move only a few days before the deadline at best.

Anyone happen to read the article on NHL.com about Neil Smith today? One of the best pieces I've read about anything having to do with this organization in years. Smith was able to unload some talented players in order to build a perfect cup contending team. Sometimes it's not about having the best players or the best lineup, but having the right role players in your organization.

So with all the moves made this deadline, is there anything you can think of that you would have done differently thus far? Granted there are still 3 days remaining before we reach the deadline, but here's a look at what I would have done if I was Glenn Sather....

1) Made a bigger push for Cory Stillman. Yes, he's aged. But lets face facts, the Rangers cannot score goals. Stillman would have added some much needed experience up front and could have found a place in the lineup next to Vinny Prospal, and hopefully Marian Gaborik. Stillman is a UFA at the end of the season, so having him as a rental really could not have hurt this team anymore than having another unproductive forward upfront.

2) I know a lot of you are going to disagree with this, and rightfully so, but I would have claimed Zherdev off waivers when the Flyers decided they didn't need him anymore. Face it, this guy just has flatout talent. His problem has always been motivation, and that's definitely a huge folly but what would have happened if we put him with guys like Gaborik and Prospal? That's a pretty fucking talented line right there, and one that would probably find a way to produce. Prospal has looked excellent since returning from his knee injury, if only Gaborik wasn't a piece of fucking glass. Yet again, Zherdev is a UFA at the end of the season, so there is absolutely no pressure to sign him if it doesn't pan out.

3) Are you honestly going to tell me that with all the depth the Rangers have with defensive prospects (Gilroy Del Zotto Sauer McDonough not to mention Eminger who in my opinion has been one of the best defenseman for the Rangers this season) the Rangers couldn't make a move to get some experience back there? This team needs an experienced defenseman to man the blueline for them and run the powerplay.

4) Which leads me into my final point. Bring in McCabe. McCabe throughout his career has shown he can handle being the pointman on the top powerplay unit. It's not too late, and for the third time, he is a UFA at the end of the season.

Bottom line, I am so fucking frustrated with Sather. He's been fucking terrible his entire tenure in New York, and with teams like Carolina Buffalo Atlanta all making some sort of moves to add depth, don't be surprised when the Rangers fall out of a playoff spot for the second season in a row.

.... And fuck the New Jersey Devils. I am so fucking sick of this franchise. I was beginning to think Parise would opt out of Jersey at the end of this season, and Kovalchuk seems to have found his game. Every fucking season with this team

For more about how much Sather fucking sucks, I found this link entertaining. Take a look.

2/22 Pregame: New York Rangers Vs Carolina Hurricanes

New York Rangers 31-26-4 66 pts 7th in East
Carolina Hurricanes 28-24-8 64 pts 8th in East

I really am getting tired of saying this is another must win for the Rangers. With only 21 games remaining, the Rangers must accrue as many points as possible. With surging teams behind them like the Buffalo Sabres and, I hate to say it, but the New Jersey Devils, the Rangers cannot allow any points to slip away, especially to a team that is directly behind them in the standings.

The Rangers come into this game with a 2-7-1 mark in their last 10, and not a whole lot of confidence to boot. Frustration is apparent on the faces of the disgruntled Rangers' faces, and it has begun to show in their play. The biggest key to tonight's matchup with the 'Canes... get on the scoresheet first. The Rangers have scored first just 1 time in their last 8 games, and although they lead the NHL in points when trailing after 2 periods (17), a lead would take much of the pressure away from a Ranger team that is having confidence issues.

Tonight's matchup is the perfect opportunity to put some distance between them and the 'Canes, as the 'Canes are just 3-5-2 in their last 10. The 'Canes have owned the Rangers thus far this season, posting a 2-0-1 mark against them in 3 matchups. If the Rangers can keep captain Eric Staal at bay, they will have a good chance to take 2 points from Carolina.

Lundqvist was the first goalie off the ice during the morning skate, so we can expect to see him trying to fight off a storm tonight in Carolina. Expect to see an Allstar duel in goal tonight.

As the deadline approaches, it's yet to be seen whether or not the Rangers will make any moves. While rumors around Gaborik continue to swirl, Sather has yet to improve this Ranger team for a playoff push, and maybe that is for the better. The Rangers are not a cup contender this season, and are better off holding onto their assets and signing Brad Richards this off season.

Key Notes: Marian Gaborik did not make the trip with the Rangers

12/20 Pregame: Philadelphia Flyers Vs New York Rangers

New York Rangers 31-25-4 66 pts 7th in East
Philadelphia Flyers 38-15-5 81 pts 1st in East

There is not a single team in the NHL I despise as much as the Philadelphia Flyers. Having lived in Philadelphia for the last 4 years, I can tell all of you that there is not a city in the world that has more bandwagon fans. The better the Flyers do, the more fans they have. Fuck this fucking team. You want to know how hard it is to have an intelligent conversation with a Flyer fan? Not possible.

The Flyers have recently brought in Kris Versteeg from Toronto in exchange for a 1st round and 3rd round draft pick. Clearly this team is all or nothing this year. Anything short of the Stanley Cup is a disappointment for a Flyer team that had the easiest road to the cup finals last season. Nothing seems to slow down this team, and it will take an extraordinary effort on behalf of the Broadway Blueshirts to shut down this dynamic offensive team.

The last time these two teams met, the Flyers took an early 3-0 lead on the Rangers, only to hold on for dear life in a game that saw the Rangers put forth a pitiful effort until the 3rd period. At that point, the Rangers were a mere 6 points out of 1st place in the East. Now, the Flyers and Rangers have gone different directions as the Rangers are struggling for playoff life.

The Rangers may have a bit of luck on their side, as Flyers captain Mike Richards missed Friday night's game with flu-like symptoms. With any luck, Richards will miss out on Sunday;s matinee at the Garden. It's still up in the air as to who will start Tuesday's matchup, I would expect to see Marty Biron between the pipes. Although Lundqvist appears to have snapped out of his recent funk, Biron has played well enough to earn a start against one of his former teams, and with the Rangers fighting to keep their heads above water Lundqvist will need to start most of hte Rangers' remaining games.

AGAIN, LUNDQVIST BETWEEN THE PIPES FOR THIS GAME. TORTORELLA ISN'T TAKING ANY CHANCES

What are the chances the Rangers are going to walk away with the 2 points? Only time will tell. The Rangers have proven time and time again that they are not a team that should be counted out, while at the same time have not played well enough to say they are amongst the elite of the NHL.

2/18 Pregame: New York Rangers Vs New Jersey Devils

New York Rangers 31-24-4 66 pts 7th in east
New Jersey Devils 23-30-4 50 pts 13th in east

Don't let the records fool you. Tonight's matchup in at the Prudential Center in Newark will be no cake walk for the struggling Rangers. The Devils come into this game with an impressive 8-1-1 mark in their last 10, and have been getting it done without the likes of Martin Brodeur. On the flip side, the Rangers have won 2 in a row after dropping 6 straight and look to continue their stellar play on the road this season.

Brandon Prust Brandon Prust #8 of the New York Rangers fights with Bradley Mills #47 of the New Jersey Devils during their pre season game on September 23, 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Rangers come into this game having won two straight on home ice, and look to carry their success with them to Newark. Although clearly not the way coach Tortorella scripted it, the Rangers managed to pull out a gritty 4-3 shootout victory over the red hot LA Kings. For the second time this season, a team on a tear has come into the Garden only to walk away baffled and disappointed (Rangers defeated Vancouver 1-0 when Vancouver was on a 14-0-3 run back on January 13th). Last night's victory saw the Rangers blow 2 1 goal third period leads in a matter of minutes, a blown 4 on 3 powerplay in overtime, and a mix of some fantastic goaltending to some terribly soft goals.

Just when it appeared Henrik Lundqvist was back on his game after making multiple big saves in the first, the king was tagged for 3 pitiful goals and the Rangers needed a shootout to prevail over the Kings' backup goaltender.

Seeing as Lundqvist got the nod last night, expect to see Marty Biron in net tonight in Newark. Biron has been very solid of late, and was one of the only bright spots for the Rangers when they were in a 6 game losing skid. On the flip side, Ilya Kovalchuk seems to have found his place in the New Jersey lineup. Although unlikely he will net 40 this season (first time since 02-03) he has been very hot of late, and the Rangers will have to keep a very close eye on him.

LATEST REPORT: LUNDQVIST IN NET TONIGHT AGAINST THE DEVILS

With a win tonight, the Rangers would find themselves only 1 point out of 6th in the Eastern Conference. Seeing as the Rangers don't match up particularly well with the #1 seeded Flyers and #2 seeded Lightning, it is imperative that they make a push for 6th and likely draw the Bruins, or it could be another 1 and done playoffs for the Rangers.

2/17 Pregame: Los Angeles Kings Vs New York Rangers

New York Rangers 30-24-4 64 points 7th in East
Los Angeles Kings 32-22-3 67 points 9th in West

Another big game at the Garden tonight as the Rangers look to build off their 5-3 victory over an extremely hot Los Angeles Kings team. Don't be fooled by the Kings being in 9th place as the West is very competitive. The Kings are in 5th place in the Pacific division, but are only 2 points out of the division lead.

With only 24 games remaining in the regular season, it goes without saying that the Rangers must take the 2 points tonight, and this will be no easy task against a Kings team that has come away with points in 10 straight (8-0-2). The Kings have been able to get it done without the production of one of the most talented centers in the game, as Anze Kopitar has only 2 goals in his last 22 games.

The Rangers should have the edge in net tonight. This is assuming of course that the king is the king. Henrik Lundqvist will be between the pipes tonight looking down at Jonathan Bernier 200ft away. Lundqvist has been very shaky of late, and will need to be back in playoff form tonight against a very skilled Kings team.

The Kings come into the Garden after a hard fought battle with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where they came away with the Win in the shootout. The Rangers will need to avoid that usual slow start or this game could be over before it even begins. If they can come out with a high energy game, it is very likely they will give the 9th place Kings a run for their money.

REALISTIC Deadline Options

Alright so I think it's time for some trade possibilities that aren't completely outlandish. The Rangers aren't trading Gaborik and they aren't getting Stastny, but I think there are a few guys the Rangers could (and possibly should) be looking at. Steve Zipay has reported that Sather is willing to part with a prospect and one of two second round picks currently in the Ranger's possession if a deal comes around that addresses the Rangers current issues and does not compromise the core of the team. Lets take a look at a few possible remedies.

Ian White

There have been rumblings for says now that he is on the outs in Carolina already. He was even excluded from the team's morning skate yesterday and in a statement the team suggested that they may trade him if they get the deal they're looking for. That should be the Rangers cue. White is a solid puck-moving defenseman who could definitely improve the team's anemic powerplay. He's bounced around a bit, and that may have something to do with his small stature, but the guy can shoot the puck and make plays from the back; something the Rangers have lacked since Del Zotto has fallen off the face of the earth.

Now some of you may be saying what about Kaberle, he's available and highly talented, plus hes a UFA at the seasons end, but there are several reasons why Kaberle is NOT the best option. The biggest thing with Kaberle is that he is going to be very expensive. At the deadline, offensive defenseman are a HOT commodity, and Kaberle is an excellent talent that the Leafs are going to sell very high. Second off, he brings no physicality to the table. The Rangers have become a hard working, physical team, and if a player your bringing in can't play that way, then stay away. Lastly, he has no shot from the point. The man is all assists, and while that may complement some teams (Bruins for example, Kaberle feeding Chara on the point on the powerplay is a scary thought), the Rangers need a guy who can blast it from the point. White can do both, and I have a feeling he wont be too expensive, certainly not anywhere near the price of Kaberle.

Stephen Weiss

A first line center. No, not a premier, all-star center, but a damn good one indeed. Florida is probably going to have a fire-sale this deadline and Stephen Weiss looks like he may be on the move. He's a great passer of the puck and a solid two-way guy who could bring some spring back to Gaborik's step. He though is also not very physical, but if he would connect with Gaborik and they could get solid offensive chemistry going, I don't think his lack fof physicality is going to play too much of a role.

Weiss also has two years left on his contract. This could be a problem if the Rangers actually do have intentions of signing Brad Richards this off-season. But if they don't and the price is right, Weiss is a good option up the middle that could give the team the closest thing to a first line center since Michael Nylander.

Cory Stillman

Yes, he is an old man now, but he can still play. Stillman has also won the Cup with the Hurricanes and Lightening (with Torts) in back-to-back years. A crafty vet may help the Rangers offense, especially come playoff time. The guy knows how to get it down in a grueling playoff series and he would provide some much needed leadership; leadership that Drury has failed to provide for this team.

I think he will come cheap. I mean the dude is 37 years old. I can't imagine much more than a 3rd round pick will be requested of him. He is a UFA at the end of the season, but he is also a winger. We don't REALLY need another winger, but injuries happen and maybe Dubinsky will find himself at center again before the season is through, possibly opening up a spot for Stillman on left wing. If the Rangers don't grab him, somebody will. He has too much experience and skill to not be moved.

The Rangers always seem to do something come deadline day, and with there being several issues that need addressing (1st line center, puck-moving D-man), and several options available its hard to see the Rangers sitting pat. My first choice would be White, simply because we need a puck moving guy in the back and because I want Brad Richards, and if we acquire Weiss we wont have cap space. So Glenn if you're reading this: White is available, get it done.

What's the peak for Dubi?

As a Ranger fan there are two guys we cannot get enough of, Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky. While neither of them have ever eclipsed the 45 point mark in their 4 years in the NHL, both of them are having what appears to be a breakout season, as Dubinsky has 19 goals and 23 assits for 42 points in 53 games, and Callahan has 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points in 38 games. If these two continue to produce, neither of them should have any problem reaching the 45 point plateau.

But just how good is Brandon Dubinsky? In this his 4th pro season (he played 6 games in 06-07 so im neglecting that), Dubi is about to reach 20 goals for the second time in his career. Still only 24, Dubi can only and will only get better. While he may be more skilled than a player like Ryan Callahan, they both play a similar style of game; they both get in the corners take the body block shots and work hard to put up points. In my opinion, these two need to stay on the same line as they seem to be a perfect complement to each other.

Had Dubinsky played the entire 82 game season this year and not missed any time with injury, he would be on pace for 65 points in 82 games. Clearly, a very big breakout season for a guy whose former career high was 44 points. Dubi has become a pivotal role player on this very young Ranger team, and will very likely receive either an A or the C when Drury is gone in 1 year, and he deserves it. Whether its playing big minutes on the penalty kill, or fighting the Flyers captain Mike Richards, Dubi is going to be one hell of a leader in this organization.

But where does his potential become a reality? At what point can we say, "okay, Dubi put up ___ points this year, your typical Dubi productive season?" I think his growth has much more to do with the players around him than with Dubinsky himself.

In my mind, the ideal line for Dubinsky is playing the wing with Anisimov up the middle and Callahan on the other wing. While this line has struggled of late, I cannot put this blame on Dubinsky. I put it ALL on Anisimov. The 22 year old Russian is in his second season with the Rangers. Putting up 28 points his rookie campaign in 82 games, Anisimov has already surpassed this total with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points in 58 games. If this pace continues, Anisimov should end up right around the 40 point mark for the season. Sounds awfully familiar to Dubinsky. At 6' 4" and only 197lbs, Anisimov needs to bulk up and start playing with more confidence, and he will easily produce at the same rate Dubinsky is producing.

Dubi and Anisimov

So if you have a guy like Anisimov able to produce steadily, isn't it safe to say Dubi (along w Callahan) will easily eclipse the 65 point mark every season? Hopefully by the time Anisimov has developed into the player we all hope he can be, he will be a big rugged center w/ superb hands, and will fit in perfectly between Callahan and Dubinsky.

I hate to say it, but I truly feel that Dubinsky's progress is beyond his control. Over the years he has been put with guys like Jagr and Gaborik, and while it may have worked in brief stints, there has been no consistency there. I just get the feeling that his place is on the wing with Anisimov and Callahan, and in a few years every guy on this line could easily be putting up 70+ points.

Why not make a deal with slumping Colorado?

I've spent so much time thinking of deals that would get Gaborik out of New York, so now I'm going to throw one out here to you guys that would bring in support for him rather than ship him away.

If anyone has been following the Colorado Ave's, you'd know that Colorado has lost 10 of its last 11, is now 1 game under 500, and virtually has no shot at making the playoffs with a very competitive Western Conference. I happen to watch them a lot on center ice and I've got to tell you, I would love to see Paul Stastny in a Ranger sweater.

So here's my proposal: Paul Stastny and Kevin Shattenkirk for Artem Anisemov Michael Del Zotto and a 1st round pick.

Stastny has quietly become one of the premier center iceman in the game. For those of you who are not familiar with Stastny, he put up 78 points his rookie season (06-07), and has eclipsed the 70 point mark 3 times in 4 NHL seasons. He reminds me more and more of Henrik Sedin every time I watch him. His vision is superb, he has incredible hands, and always makes smart decisions on the ice. Hell, the most talented player he's played with in Colorado is Milan Hejduk. Not that I have anything against Hejduk, but this isn't the same Hejduk that won the cup with Colorado in 01. Imagine a guy like that with Marian Gaborik? Gaborik could have 50 goals with ease and Stastny would push 90 points.

Stastny and Shattenkirk celebrating together.

The other component to this trade is Kevin Shattenkirk. Shattenkirk has quietly had a very nice rookie campaign, with 26 points in just over 40 games for Colorado. Playing on the second powerplay unit (John Michael Liles gets most of the top powerplay time on the point), Shattenkirk has shown some very nice poise back on the blue line, and should develop nicely into a solid blue liner for the powerplay.

I know this proposal is going to upset you Andrew, but lets face facts. Anisemov will NEVER be as good of a player as Stastny. Not only has Stastny put up 70 points in 3 of his first 4 seasons, but he won a silver medal with the US olympic team alongside Callahan. He plays a hardworking game just like the American core on this team, and will be a perfect complement for the system the Rangers have implemented under the assistant coach of that Olympic team. The 26 year old centerman is just another young leader that would fit in nicely on this Ranger team building for the next 2-3 years. While I agree that Anisemov can develop into a very good big man with soft hands, I would take Stastny any day of the week.

I think all New York Ranger fans have lost patience with Michael Del Zotto. After an impressive rookie year, he looks absolutely lost on the ice and scares the shit out of all New York fans every time he is in his own defensive zone. In my mind, this is the perfect trade for the Rangers. Colorado has to realize playoffs are no longer in the picture. With Matt Duchene clearly the up and coming star of that franchise, they have plenty of time to develop a player like Anisemov, while the Rangers who are trying to make a push for the cup in the next 2-4 years do not.

Colorado's biggest problem is their lack of solid goaltending. Craig Anderson backed up by Peter Budaj. If they were able to move Stastny's 6.67 mil a year contract and replace it w a guy like Anisemov, they would have plenty of room to sign a big time goalie this off season, say Tomas Vokoun.

Weigh in on this proposal.

Flyers bring in Versteeg, making push for Cup

Well, as if the Flyers needed any more offensive firepower, they have now brought in Kris Versteeg from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a first and third round pick in next years draft.

Kris Versteeg - Toronto Maple Leafs v Philadelphia Flyers

Versteeg now in his 4th NHL season was on the Stanley Cup winning Chicago Blackhawks last season. He had 14 points in last seasons cup run while playing with a talented Blackhawk offense, and now has a chance to find a way back into the finals with the Flyers run and gun offense. Versteeg currently has 35 points in 53 games, but should have no trouble producing with all the offensive talent the Flyers can put around him. He should add some playoff experience to a very young Flyer team.

Fuck the god damn Flyers. Honestly, this trade doesn't make that much of a difference for an already offensively superb team. But to bring in the 24 year old in exchange for a 1st adn 3rd rounder? Like they need those picks. Fuck the Flyers.

What's this mean? Versteeg is only 24, so my guess is they are getting ready to really unload one of their young talented players (Ville Leino or James VanRymsdyk maybe) for a goalie. Keep an eye out for Vokoun or Giguiere to be on the move to the Flyers...

2/13 Postgame: Rangers defeat Penguins 5-3

The New York Rangers Celebrate Victory Over The Pittsburgh Penguins At Madison Square Garden On February 13, 2011 In

The Rangers finally ended their losing skid tonight against the battered Penguins in a game which essentially could be looked at as a microcosm of their season. They came out flat, which seems to be getting old real quick, and it resulted in them going down two goals five minutes into the first frame.

Lucky enough for the Rangers, Brian Boyle was able to redirect a puck and find the back of the net almost immediately following Pittsburgh's second goal. The powerplay finally woke up, and with it, Ryan Callahan. His powerplay goal led the Rangers into the second tied 2-2.

Before the Rangers banged in two more powerplay goals, Vinny Prospal buried one home in front off a beauty of a pass from Brandon Dubinsky. Callahan and Anisimov then added their tallies before Brett Sterling scored a shitty goal on Lundqvist in the third to round out the scoring at 5-3.

Bottomline: Rangers came out flat once again but were able to erase the margin thanks to a powerplay in which we saw Wolski manning then point. The Rangers still struggled defensively, and per usual, Lundqvist was weak. The major plus was the fact that the Rangers had finally buried a fair amount of goals, with the majority of them being on the powerplay.

I want the postgames to be more of discussion, so please, tell us what you thought of the game.

Pussy Penguins tanking for a high draft pick?

That fucking pussy Crosby has been out of the lineup since January 6th b/c of concussion symptoms. Malkin went down on February 4th in Buffalo and recently had season ending surgery to repair a torn MCL/ACL. Prior to this season ending hit, Malkin had been fighting to stay in the lineup.

Malkin after Tyler Myers crushed him int he corner

The Penguins managed to win 1 of their last 5 since these two have been down (2-1 OT win VS LA Kings), but dropped their last 2 games by a count of 14-5 against a 14th place New York Islander team and a New York Ranger team that coming in had lost 6 in a row (including a 7 round shootout loss to these very same Penguins w.o Crosby and Malkin). The best third line center in the game has been moved to a top line spot and has to carry most of the load with these two down, and Jordan Staal just is not that kind of producer up front. What comes next for this Penguin team?

Crosby assuming the position.

With no timetable for Crosby's return, I can't see them making any trades at the deadline to rejuvenate their crippled offense. After watching them jump out to a 2 goal lead in the first 5 minutes of today's game and allow 5 straight to a team that hasn't scored more than 3 goals in the last 21 games, this Penguin team clearly is not dominant without Crosby and Malkin. Having 24 games left, I can't see them going any better than 6-18. That would have the Pens finish the season with 86 points, which should be well short of the 8th and final playoff spot.

Since this Penguin has absolutely no depth beyond Crosby and Malkin, the Penguins clearly need to find a way to rebuild their offense. If the Pens begin to tank and slip out of a playoff spot, would it surprise you to see them tank for a high draft pic? They clearly need to find a way to replenish their offense, and what better way than to build through the draft? If there was ever a season to do it, it would be this one, when the NHL won't rip on them for losing 18 of 24 without Crosby and Malkin. I personally don't buy that shit, think Crosby is a fucking pussy, and Pens will tank for a better first round pick in the upcoming draft.

Another Gaborik Proposal?

Considering this page is still relatively new, I'm going to keep this personal. Last night at Brett's, Rob and I were discussing yet another trade proposal for Gaborik. Although an unlikely trade to happen, post your opinion as to whether or not you would do it. We are interested in your response.

Gaborik Del Zotto and a 2nd round pick for Brooks Orpik and Jordan Staal is the trade that Rob proposed to me. He claims Jordan Staal will be one of the best power third line forwards in the game for years to come.

Jordan Staal throwing an elbow to brother Marc. Probably in response to that monster hit Marc put on him at the Garden.

The other component to this trade is Brooks Orpik. A first round pick, Orpik has clearly become a leader on the Penguins and lets his impressive defensive play and bone crushing hits do the talking for him. Orpik has become a cornerstone of this Penguins organization.

At first, my initial reaction was no, solely because in my mind a second round pick is too much to throw away. I said I'd be more inclined to accept this trade if it was a 3rd or 4th rounder. The more I think about it now, the less I want to do this trade and here's why.

As Rob puts it, Jordan Staal is going to be a premier power third line center. I am not disagreeing with this at all. I am a huge Jordal Staal fan. On a Rangers team though, what exactly is the third line? Gaborik Christensen Prospal, Wolski Stepan Zuccarello, Callahan Anisemov Dubinsky, Prust Boyle Avery.

To me, the third line is Callahan Dubinsky and Anisemov. They don't play third line minutes because they are hard working and make things happen, but they are definitely the third line. Insert Jordan Staal for Anisemov. Staal Callahan Dubinsky? I'm in love. But then what happens to Anisemov? Where is he going to fit in? I've always thought that when he picks his game up, he will be a perfect complement to Callahan and Dubinsky. Maybe Jordan Staal with Boyle and Prust? Idk but that's not the only thing I have against this trade.

Brooks Orpik leveling Colton Orr.

Brooks Orpik is one of the most valuable defensive defenseman in the game who loves nothing more than to take the body. If you tell me you wouldn't want him on your team if you were starting a team I'd call you a liar or accuse you of knowing nothing about hockey. The problem with him being a part of this trade? Rangers are a very solid defensive team. We don't need another solid defensiive defenseman in my mind. We need that quarterback on the powerplay. I'd be more inclined to move Girardi for Orpik than give up Del Zotto solely b/c Del Zotto at elast has potential to become an offensive threat on the blue line.

While Brooks Orpik and Jordan Staal are two guys I'd love to have on my team, I can't justify this trade. It just doesn't sit right with me. This wouldn't solve any of the problems that the Rangers have, and losing Gaborik for no offense? I guess it can go either way as Staal and Orpik are two premier players I wouldn't mind seeing in a NYR jersey. Let me know what you think, Gaborik will be a hot topic until the trade deadline.

2/13 Pregame: Pittsburgh Penguins VS New York Rangers

New York Rangers 29-24-4 7th in East
Pittsburgh Penguins 35-18-4 4th in East

Well, here we go again. Another must win for a team that cannot afford to give up another 2 points in a tight eastern conference race.

Callahan celebrating with Dubinsky and Anisemov. Wouldn't it be nice to see this more often?

In a repeat of their matchup 12 days ago, the Rangers will once again host the Penguins w.o superstars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. While everyone assumed that was a game the Rangers would take with ease, the Rangers managed to squander a 2 goal lead, and spent most of the third period battling to tie the game up, all of which ended up being in vein as the Rangers couldn't manage to put 1 past Marc-Andre Fleury a 7 round shootout loss.

The Penguins are coming off an embarrassing 9-3 loss to the Islanders on Friday in a game that saw 315 PIM and another fighting major for goalie Brent Johnson. Expect to see Marc-Andre Fleury manning the net in today's matinee. The Penguins will also be without Eric Godard, who received a 10 game suspension for his part in Friday's brawl.

While you think this would give the Rangers the edge in today's contest, the Rangers are coming off one of their worst losses of the season, when they squandered their first 3rd period lead of the season when Atlanta stormed back for 2 late in the third to send the Blueshirts to their 6th straight loss.

In order to get back on track, the Rangers are going to need to put all of their recent play in the past, and focus on annihilating a depleted Penguins team. Is there any reason the Rangers should lose to a team that the Islanders were able to defeat 9-3 just 2 days ago? On a brighter note, Lundqvist was back to his old self against the Thrashers and is expected to start his second straight today.

Any excuses if they lose? Absolutely not. Another loss here would mean 7 straight, and open the door for teams like Carolina Atlanta and Buffalo to surpass them in the east. With games against the Flyers, Devils (who are one of the hottest teams in hockey), Kings, and Hurricanes coming up, it is imperative that the Rangers snap this skid right here right now.

Key Note: Del Zotto scratched Eminger back in the lineup

2/11 Pregame: New York Rangers Vs. Atlanta Thrashers

New York Rangers 29-23-4 62 Points
Atlanta Thrashers 24-22-10 58 Points

With 26 games remaining in the regular season, it's difficult to say tonight's matchup with Atlanta is a must win, but that's exactly what it is. After dropping 5 straight by a total of 8 goals, the 7th place New York Rangers face off against the 9th seeded Atlanta Thrashers at 7:30 EST in Atlanta.

Mats Zuccarello's shootout beauty Jan 22.

Both of these teams have been struggling mightily of late, with Atlanta having lost its last 4 contests. With both of these teams having played 56 games, the Rangers cannot afford to allow 2 points to slip away to a team that could turn it around with a big win at home Vs. a conference rival.

This current 5 game losing skid began with some rare and unexpected poor play of one of the highest paid goaltender in the NHL. Lundqvist, who season after season has been the leg the Rangers have stood on, allowed 3 goals against a offensively challenged Florida Panther team before the Allstar break, followed by 3 against a Penguin team that was lacking superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in a tough 7 round shootout loss. As if that was not bad enough, Lundqvist was yanked by coach Tortorella after allowing 3 goals on 12 shots against their closest in proximity rivals, the New Jersey Devils. Since that game, Biron has come in and given the Rangers 2 quality starts, but the Rangers offense has not been able to pick up the slack, as they dropped consecutive games by a margin of 1 goal each.

In order to break this losing streak, the Rangers are going to need several key things to go right for them tonight. They must play a smart defensive game and cannot afford to take ill-advised penalties. The Atlanta powerplay, manned by 'Big Buff' on the blue line, was the difference back in October, when Buff beat Marty Biron top shelf to solidify a 6-4 Atlanta win at Madison Square Garden. With the addition of Tobias Enstrom back to the Thrasher lineup, this Atlanta powerplay can be extremely dangerous.

Smart defensive play will not be the only key to tonight's matchup with the Thrashers. The Rangers' offense must break out of it's current funk, and find ways to put the puck in the back of the net. Key role players must step up and make themselves noticeable on the ice. I am speaking primarily of Marian Gaborik. Gaborik has just 1 goal in his last 8 games, and has not been any sort of offensive threat in that stretch.

With 2 huge points up for grabs tonight in Atlanta, the New York Rangers need to the hungrier of the two teams, and start the game with that high energy play that coach Tortorella has praised this team for all season. With Lundqvist between the pipes tonight, the Rangers are hoping he can get out of this current funk he has been in and bring home the win in what may possibly be the biggest game of the season to this point. A loss tonight would drop the Rangers to their 6th straight loss, and with games against the Penguins Kings Flyers Devils and Hurricanes coming up, it is vital for them to get back on track in a hurry, or fall out of a playoff spot all together.

Key Notes: Don't expect to see Eminger in the lineup tonight. Enstrom back in for the Thrashers.

Time to step up

Brainstorm with me for a minute.

Prospal Christensen Gaborik
Dubinsky Anisemov Callahan
Wolski Stepan Zuccarello
Prust Boyle Avery

That looks pretty solid to me. It's time for underachieving guys to step up so lets take a closer look at what's really going on.

Since this website is dedicated to being a Rangers rant, lets get the good shit out of the way early. Wolski Stepan Zuccarello. There aren't enough good things you can say about this combination. A trio of young talented hard working players who give you everything they've got every time they are on the ice. In my eyes, clearly the best line when Callahan and Dubinsky went down. If not for these guys, the Rangers would have easily slipped out of a playoff spot. Great things to come if the Rangers can keep this line together for the future considering the average age on this line is just over 22.

Prust Boyle Avery. For a line whose total overall cap hit is under $4 million ($3.2625 to be exact), this has been by far the most enjoyable line combination the Rangers have put out there for me since Barnaby was on the team. These guys battle for every single loose puck, block shots, take the body, and the best part of all, they can all drop the gloves. Prust fighting guys who have easily half a foot on him? Guy is invaluable.

Prospal Christensen Gaborik. Holy crap. Gaborik has looked like a fish out of water for months. This guy hadn't been able to get anything going at all after scoring 42 last year along w/ 44 helpers. Granted he has had absolutely no support at all, but even on the powerless play the guy just doesn't look comfortable. If he doesn't get the talent around him, he will never thrive in New York with the system that Tortorella is trying to implement. Prospal and Christensen? I guess we will have to wait and see. Prospal in my eyes looked superb against the Devils for a guy who missed 50 games. Hopefully he can get Gaborik the puck in some scoring positions. Christensen I have never been a fan of. Unless the game is going into a shootout, he is just another body. But for a line whose overall cap hit is just over $10.5 million ($10.575), they must be the offensive juggernaut that the Rangers have so desperately needed.

Which leads us to by far the most intriguing line combination of them all. Callahan Anisemov Dubinsky. Without a doubt, Callahan and Dubinsky are the faces of this team for years to come (along w/ Lundqvist adn Staal). They are exactly the players you want in coach Tortorella's system. Callahan lead the team last year with 285 hits which was good enough to put him 4th in the NHL (1st on the Rangers by 107). These two players kill penalties, play the powerplay, and work hard every single even strength shift. The two future captains of this team (name one C one A I honestly don't care which one is which).

Arten Anisemov. Oh boy. There is not a single player on the Rangers who has frustrated me this much. 22 years old. 6' 4" 200lbs. 28 points in 56 games. Respectable numbers for a second year player. I've never seen a guy whose 6'4" get pushed off so many pucks. If there was ever a Ranger who could impact the team by stepping his game up, its this guy. If (and hopefully when) Anisemov elevates his game to the level it should be at, this line combination with Callahan and Dubinsky will easily put up 60 points a player. He needs to bulk up and use that big body of his to dominate the offensive zone. Can he break out sometime soon? We can only hope so. If and when he does, the Rangers will have 4 line combinations that opposing defenses will have to worry about.

So basically what I've said is Anisemov and the entire top line need to step up. But let me end with this. As I said, this team is Callahan's and Dubinsky's. It's time they take control of it. These two need to stop being the leaders of the future because the future is now. Take control of this team and assert yourselves as the leaders you were born to be.

Fuck you Drury, it's time to retire

Incase you missed it, this is the latest headline on NYR.com... 'Drury to have surgery on left knee.. Tortorella tells reporters that captain will likely miss 6 weeks'

It goes without saying that I am ecstatic, as I'm sure most of you are, that Drury will be out of the lineup again. Guy's got 0 goals and 4 assists since coming back from his 'injruy.' In case anyone forgot, this is hockey. Guys get cut in the face and come back with a shield.

But that's not the issue I have with Chris Drury. The fact is, that fucking moron Sather gave him 7 mil a year. While it's a good thing he only has 1 year left on his contract, it's definitely time for waste of cap space to retire. This upcoming offseason, Callahan Dubinsky Boyle Gilroy and Anisemov are all RFA's. Callahan and Dubinsky are the future captains on this team. We need to lock them up for as long as we can at the right price. As far as everyone else, Anisemov has frustrated me to no end, but the guy's only 22 and he needs a contract. Boyle and Gilroy, how can you not want to extend a contract w/ how they have performed this year.

As if that isn't enough money the Rangers are going to have to come up with, you still have the problem of having no one to play with Gaborik. He needs that #1 center or he's pretty much useless. Solution, Brad Richards. Richards is an UFA this off season, and the Rangers should be throwing all the money they can at this guy on a 2-4 year deal. Where are they going to come up w/ this money? I have no fucking clue.

Contrary to what a bunch of fucking morons on the Ranger facebook page have been saying, Chris Drury is NOT in his prime. Besides the fact that he's 34, he can't stay in the lineup anymore because of injury as well as his poor play. Do us all a favor Drury, retire. Be a real captain and do what's best for this organization. With that 7 million off the cap for next year, we can give Richards the money he needs, while still having more than enough room to lock up the key role players on this team.

I realize all athletes no are all about the fucking money but come on. This guy wanted more than anything to come to the New York Rangers and be a leader when he hit the free agent market. If he could walk away from that money, this franchise would be indebted to him forever. In my eyes, just as great a leader as Messier.

Give him a job developing our young talent since that's all he's good for anyway. Give up that fucking 7 million for the good of this franchise. The Rangers are finally building a team that can win the cup, and I guarentee you if Drury let that money go to the organization, the Rangers will win at least 2 cups between 2012 and 2016.

Fuck you Drury. Do the right thing and stop stealing from this fucking organization.
